Regular yoga practices are important for a sound mind and healthy body:

SIRSASANA ( Headstand) :

Sirsasana or “Salamba Sirsasana” is known as “king of asanas”. Sirsa is a Sanskrit word meaning head. It is upside-down exercise that increases the flow of oxygen-rich blood into the brain, making blood vessels in the brain strong. It helps boost concentration and sharpen memory. Strengthen the vertebral column, leg, arm and lungs. It helps in calming the brain to a large extent, reduces stress and anxiety. Sirsasana improves digestion and strengthens the spine.

How to perform:

  1. Interlock your fingers in a form of a cup and place your head between them.
  2. Sit with your legs folded backwards and raise your knees upwards from the floor.
  3. Slowly raise your legs upwards.
  4. As you are balanced in this position, raise your legs up-straight.
  5. Maintain the balance so that you don’t fall.
  6. Relax in this position, close your eyes and breathe normally.
  7. Stay in the same position as long as you are comfortable.
  8. Come back slowly by folding your knees.

TADASANA( mountain pose):

It is a standing Asana and is a modern yoga practice. It strengthens the knee, ankle and thighs. It helps in correcting posture by making our spine straight. “Tada” is a Sanskrit word meaning “palm tree.” Tadasana is the foundation of all standing yoga. It helps a lot in increasing height. Relive various stomach ailments. This asana requires engagement of the whole body and thus relaxes the mind. It makes the body more flexible and increases ankle strength. Tadasana also increases, joins flexibility and regulates the menstrual cycle in women. It makes the respiratory and digestive system stronger.

How to perform Tadasana:

  1. Stand with your feet slight apart.
  2. Slowly raise your hands and interlock them above your head.
  3. As you inhale, raise your heels as much as possible.
  4. Stay in the position as long as you can hold your breath.
  5. Come back to the normal position slowly while exhaling.
  6. Repeat the process 5-6 times.

VRIKSHASANA (tree pose)

Vrikshana is balancing Asana and is popular in modern yoga. It plays an important role in strengthening the vertebral column, ankles, thighs and legs. It also widens up the hips and opens the pelvic area. This yoga also strengthens the spine, thus improving the neuromuscular response and coordination. This is a kind of hath yoga for improving balancing abilities and helps in maintaining mental equilibrium.

BHUJANGA ASANA(Cobra pose)

  1. Stand straight and tall.
  2. Focus.
  3. Move the right leg up and place it in the inner side of the left thigh.
  4. Inhale and extend arms, join your palms in Namskara mudra near your chest.
  5. Remain in the same position for 1 minute, then change the leg and repeat.

The word Bhujanga Asana is a Sanskrit word in which “Bhujanga” means cobra and “asana” means posture. This yoga exercise involves arms, spine, chest and legs.

It is good for reproductive health, lungs and heart. It also strengthens the spine, chest and waist. Performing Bhujanga Asana stimulates abdominal organs and relieves sciatica. It also improves blood circulation.

How to perform:

  1. Lie flat on your stomach, keep your toes flat on the floor.
  2. Keep your legs close.
  3. Put your palms flat on the floor and elbows close to the torso.
  4. Raise your head and chest while you inhale.
  5. Exhale back and come to the ground.
  6. Repeat the process up to 10 times. Perform this yoga 3-4 hours before the meal.

PASCHIMOTTANASANA (seated forward bend)

Paschimottanasana is a Sanskrit word meaning “intense stretch of the west”. This asana strengthens the abdomen, hamstrings, and knee joints. Also helps in reducing back pain, releases upper, mid and lower back. It also stimulates the kidney, liver and ovaries. It Helps with relieving menstrual pain. This asana also helps with reducing anxiety and stress and fat.

How to perform:

  1. Sit with your legs straight out in front of you, and make sure that your spine is straight.
  2. Move your hands above your head. Keep your stomach and ribs straight and stiff and inhale and stretch.
  3. Bend forward and touch your toes, hold your toes with both the hands.
  4. Exhale and try to put your forehead on your knees. Remain in this position for a while and breathe normally.
  5. Slowly come back to the normal position. Repeat the process 4-5 times.
